The mission of our Poetry contest is to instill in children an appreciation for poetry and writing and to draw attention to National Poetry Month which occurs every April. Main Street Books poetry contest is open to all students currently in grades 1-8 with three divisions: Grade 1-3, Grade 4-6, Grade 7-8.
The theme of this year’s poetry contest is “Joy”!
Grades 1-8 entries should be handwritten legibly and no more than one page long with a maximum of two columns on the page.
Both traditional and free verse poems are acceptable.
Poetry will be judged on the following criteria: Originality: We encourage the young poets to think outside the box of the theme. For instance, the theme “Joy” would be met if in the description of a scene in the poem, only vague references were made regarding the theme. As in- “The feelings a sunset gives me”. Creativity within the theme is highly recommended. Presentation: How the poem is presented on the page to include neatness, following of guidelines, grammar, spelling and mechanics. Overall Impact: How well does the poet use words to create powerful images and/or convey feelings?
1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes will be awarded in all 3 age groups.
First Place: $25 Gift Card Second Place: $15 Gift Card Third Place: $10 Gift Card
Deadline for submissions is: April 15, 2017
