Meet Author Melanie Carvell!

Join us on Saturday March 7th at 3pm, as we welcome Melanie Carvell, author of Running with the Antelope: Life, Fitness, and Grit on the Northern Plains. She will be reading from her book and talking about her life experiances. A book signing and refreshments will follow.

Melanie Carvell is a gifted athlete who grew up in a small town in southwestern North Dakota in the 1970s. This beautiful memoir tells the story of Melanie’s remarkable journey, from the agricultural village of Mott to world duathlon and triathlon competitions, then a notable career as a physical therapist, director of the Sanford Women’s Health Center in Bismarck, North Dakota, and a widely sought-after motivational speaker.

Melanie learned to run on the northern Great Plains where the winters are long and harsh and the wind tests the human spirit. She attributes her national and international success to her agrarian roots and the challenge of biking, running, and swimming in one of the most formidable landscapes of America. Her motivational philosophy is, “If I can do these things, given the modesty of my upbringing and the harshness of the Dakota climate, so can you.” Running with the Antelope inspire readers to begin a program of athletic training, weight loss, or general self-improvement.

Written in a humble and accessible style, with loving anecdotes about her life as a top athlete and her work as a physical therapist, Running with the Antelope is part self-help book, part prairie memoir, and part song of love to North Dakota, which is undergoing a rapid transformation from its agrarian past to a carbon extraction industrial future.

Paula F. Winskye began writing novels about girls & horses at age 12, but did not seek publication for 30 years. In 2003, she released her first novel.  She has published romances, children's novels, and family saga novels. When Winskye is not writing, she enjoys gardening & working with her Tennessee Walking Horses. She & her husband John live near Sheyenne, ND. NEW for 2014 is the sixth installment of Winskye's Tony Wagner mystery series, The Reverend Down East, the author takes her protagonist to her husband's native New England. While researching this story, she hiked the same Bear Brook Trail that Tony takes up Champlain Mountain.

Tony Wagner feels aimless.  He loves his hectic family life with 3 kids and 3 foster daughters.  But he has lost interest in his job as a national park ranger. And, even though an FBI psychiatrist has cleared him to work, no agents have asked him to consult on a case. Then, Agent Wyatt Garret calls.  He has been summoned to Maine to investigate the death of a former ambassador's son. Greg O'Connor has fallen from the south face of The Precipice in Acadia National Park.  Was it murder, suicide, or just a climbing accident?  Garret needs Tony to use his climbing skills to search for evidence on the cliff face. He also admits that other agents are cautious about using Tony.  They worry that the trauma of a year earlier will effect how he reacts under pressure. Before the case is solved, they will find out.
